Blood & Chrome and general updates

Eventful week. To play catch-up:

The big news that every site reported in a slightly different way is that Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome will be a digital series and a TV film, but not a TV show, at least not one produced by Syfy/Universal Cable Prods. You have probably read the Deadline article by now.

With the possibility that Universal may still shop B&C around, it doesn't sound like they have any immediate plans to make more of it beyond the existing pilot/web series/MOW.

No word yet on a release date, but Battlestar Wiki reports that we'll be seeing Blood & Chrome as a web series first and then as a TV movie.

Doug Drexler posted this the other day (full post at the link):
If sets had been built for this show, it would have cost 6 million easily, instead of only the 2 million it did cost, and I guarantee you it never would have had the scope that B&C has. CG got us a new exciting Galactica episode that looks amazing. I know that 54 out of 55 of you will be thrilled.

Grimm previews & new interviews with Sasha Roiz

Grimm 1x13, "Three Coins in a Fuchsbau," airs tonight at 9 pm. Here is the synopsis:
A failed jewelry store robbery results in a murder that finds Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby) immersed in a hunt for rare coins. Nick soon learns that these coins have an unsettling effect on whoever possesses them, as Hank and Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz) begin to exhibit unusual behavior. Meanwhile, a mysterious old friend of Aunt Marie’s (guest star Titus Welliver, “Lost”) comes to Nick with information about his family and what led to his parent’s death. Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell and Reggie Lee also star.
Sasha Roiz did a bunch of interviews in recent days. He was on the MyMixFM podcast. You can hear the interview here. Zap2it has a short interview with him:
As for other things fans of "Grimm" can expect to see in the coming weeks, Sasha Roiz, who plays Captain Sean Renard, explains that the series will delve further into his background. He says that the show will look into why he's "as stern and as unyielding as he is."

"I see him very much as a character who believes in a certain order...with him at the top," Roiz says. "And he wants peace and he wants civil obedience within it. And he'll stop at nothing to achieve that."

Caprica Season 2 finale, Sanctuary previews, and new interviews with Meg Tilly and Christopher Heyerdahl

All right, one final update for the year.

The two-part finale of Caprica Season 2, written by Bernard Keyer, has been posted on Beginning of Line. You can read it here: Enuma Elis, Part 1 and Part 2. If you're only now discovering BoL, you can find the entire season in the Story Archive.

And if you're interested in contributing stories or fan art for Season 3, you still have a day left to email Teresa and let her know. Details on the So Say We All blog.

Also on the Caprica front, Bear McCreary tweets that the soundtrack will be released in early 2012. Hopefully.

And this is always great to see: Caprica got an honor roll mention in Huffington Post's TV section, in their Year in Television 2011 review.

Three Inches with James Marsters and Stephanie Jacobsen airs tonight (9 pm, Syfy)

Three Inches, the Syfy pilot with James Marsters and Stephanie Jacobsen that didn't get ordered to series, airs tonight at 9 pm ET on Syfy.

To recap, the network ordered the 90-minute pilot back in the spring of 2010. It was filmed in September in Toronto and, in December, Syfy decided to pick up Alphas instead, and to tweak Three Inches into a half-hour because the two were conceptually similar.

Six months went by with no news, and then in July word came from James' FB page that Syfy would not be giving Three Inches a full season, but that the pilot would air eventually. Well, that's tonight.

Here is the synopsis, from ScienceFiction.com:
In Three Inches, professional daydreamer and underachiever, Walter Spackman (Noah Reid) is struck by lightning, and develops a unique “super” power — the ability to move any object using just his mind… but only a distance of three inches. He’s soon recruited by a covert team of superheroes each gifted with their own extraordinarily ordinary abilities. Together, the unlikely band of heroes proves that “super” is simply a state of mind.

17th Precinct pilot, Sanctuary finale (part 1) and some general updates

Just checking in to wish everyone happy holidays and safe travels!

Here are a few updates to wrap things up for the week:

Someone has posted an early Christmas present for us on Vimeo - the full pilot for Ron Moore's 17th Precinct. Huge props to Caprica City (Twitter) for the find!

Apparently it's been up there for a couple of months now, but some of us were too busy whining about no air date to notice.

The pilot was directed by BSG's Michael Rymer and has what's probably the best ensemble cast since Caprica went off the air: Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Stockard Channing, Esai Morales, Eamonn Walker, Tricia Helfer and Matt Long. You can watch it on Vimeo or keep scrolling, it's embedded below.

The first part of the Sanctuary season four finale, "Sanctuary for None," airs tonight at 10 pm on Syfy. Here is a new synopsis, from Red Eye Chicago:

Written by James Thorpe and directed by Damian Kindler, the first part has Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) teaming with Hollow Earth rebel leader Caleb (guest star Gil Bellows) to build a new homeland for displaced abnormals in the Fifth Ward. Magnus wants to broker a peace deal between the insurgents, SCIU and the other government agencies, but SCIU director Greg Addison (Brian Markinson) has other ideas.

A lot goes down in that first episode involving Addison, Will (Robin Dunne), Bigfoot (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Tesla (Jonathon Young), leading Magnus to take desperate action.

Friday round-up: previews, cast interviews and new projects

This is the first part of the weekend monster update, with more news & stuff coming in the next couple of days.

I got my Grimms confused in yesterday's post as it turns out. Tonight's episode won't be "Let Your Hair Down," but "The Three Bad Wolves." Rapunzel doesn't show up until next week.
Nick (David Giuntoli) is called to a suspected arson case, which exposes a longstanding family feud that brings Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) face-to-face with characters from his troubled past. While Monroe wrestles with restraining his wild side, it’s up to Nick to keep everything from going up in flames. Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Sasha Roiz and Reggie Lee also star.
There are a few sneak peeks at THR and Dread Central. Spoiler TV has the promotional stills. Here is the teaser:

Cast on TV in September and October

Fall TV season starts tonight, with most major shows returning, so I am posting a quick list of some of the upcoming guest appearances and shows that involve Caprica's cast, writers and Bear McCreary. I have included a few appearances from Battlestar actors, too, that were announced in recent weeks and kind of hard to miss on different TV sites.

There are more than a few appearances missing from the list, mostly because there isn't even an approximate date or episode number attached to them yet - Alessandra Torresani in American Horror Story, Peter Wingfield in Sanctuary, Ben Cotton in The Secret Circle, Katee Sackhoff in The Big Bang Theory, Genevieve Buechner, Richard Harmon and Kacey Rohl in The Haunting Hour, Mike Dopud in Blue Mountain State, Aaron Douglas in Flashpoint, and probably a few others.

The list is posted below. A few updates first.

Eric Stoltz posted a few photos from the set of his latest Glee episode (3x01) the other day:

Weekly roundup: cast news, festival screenings, videos & interviews

One long and chaotic round of updates coming up.

Alessandra Torresani will make an apperance in the next episode of Warehouse 13, called "Shadows." It airs on Monday, September 12 at 9 pm. (Husbands premieres a day later, on Sept. 13.) Spoiler TV has the promotional photos. Teaser and clip embedded at the end of the post.

Ron Moore and Matt Roberts have a new project in the works. From Deadline:
ABC has bought drama pitch Hangtown, from Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore and Caprica writer Matt Roberts. Sony Pictures TV, where Moore is under an overall deal, is producing. Described as a Western with a procedural overlay, Hangtown is set in the early 1900s in a frontier town that’s begun rapidly expanding with the coming of the railroad. It centers on three characters: the Marshal, a Matt Dillon/Clint Eastwood type who prefers to solve crimes by his instinct; a young doctor from the East Coast who is interested in using the new field of forensics to solve crimes; and a young woman writer who is trying to sell dime novels to the publishing houses in New York about crime in the Wild West. Every week the instincts of the Marshal, the science of the doctor, and the young woman’s drive to tell a rousing good yarn to her editors combine to solve crimes in a wide-open, lawless town.

The A.V. Club has a fantastic interview with Patton Oswalt, whose new comedy special, Finest Hour, airs on September 5 at 10 pm on Showtime. Details at Sho.com. A quick snippet from the interview:

A quick round-up:

First, a reminder that Eric Stoltz may or may not appear in one of the two episodes of Wilfred that air tonight (10 pm, 10:30 pm, FX). He is not in any of the promos.

Esai Morales won an Imagen Award for Best Actor and Gun Hill Road nabbed the one for Best Feature Film last week. Big congrats! Zimbio has a few pics from the event. Blood and Chrome to premiere in 2012, Eureka cancelled, and some general cast updates

A quick round of updates.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome won't premiere until 2012. It's not really news, but this is the first time it's coming from a network source, Syfy President Dave Howe.
THR: Publisher Bigpoint has over 2 million registered players for Battlestar Galactica Online even without the TV show airing. What are your thoughts about the opportunities the online gaming space opens up for Battlestar and other TV shows current or past?
Howe: I think when you have a property like Battlestar Galactica, it’s timeless. Yet it’s great to have a TV series on air simultaneously, but it’s not necessary. Battlestar is a franchise that’s existed since the ‘80s. We took a run at it. Universal Pictures I think has a big development and potentially another movie. It’s a known franchise that will always work if you are true to its spirit and you really find the right vehicle to create properties and games that can live in isolation. We had great success with the TV series. We’ve seen great success with the video game. We’re developing a potential pilot for another spin-off series, Blood and Chrome, which will launch next year. We have an amazing franchise that we want to continue to exploit irrespective of whether the TV series is on air.
THR: Does the success of the Battlestar game open up other opportunities for the Battlestar franchise?
Howe: Yes, it has. It really has. It confirms what we expected, that the franchise is bigger than a TV series that we happen to be running. I think it says to us that it’s an amazing property that we can continue to develop and grow. We can continue to figure out new ways to tell the story and to spin off the story. You can look forward to more Battlestar Galactica spin-offs in the future.

Falling Skies finale, John Pyper-Ferguson on Fringe & more interviews with Esai Morales, Jane Espenson, Sasha Roiz and Scott Porter

Weekend updates, in random order:

Red Dot Diva has a new interview with Sasha Roiz. He talks about Caprica among other things (and do check out the photo of Sam Adama he posted on FB this week):
Red Dot Diva: After "Caprica" was cancelled, was there actually something you were glad that you needn't have to go through every day during filming?
Sasha: I don't miss the tattooing process each morning. But I miss the show and the wonderful friends and team that I had the pleasure to work with.

Red Dot Diva: And what was the most heartfelt moments you took back with you after the "Caprica" experience?
Sasha: The people were what made that experience so special for me. I adored my cast mates, many of whom have remained dear friends. I had a chance to work with some of the finest writers and producers in the industry and contribute to a show that I was very proud of. It's an experience I will always treasure.

Red Dot Diva: To-date, you have played many different characters (and I have to say, we enjoyed those various roles tremendously). Which one has been the most personally unique to you and which one has been the most unforgettable?
Sasha: Sam Adama will always hold a special place in my heart. I felt that the writers understood me well, and helped me in creating a very layered and complex character. I was also very proud to represent the gay community through a unique gay character. They were very supportive of my work and it felt truly rewarding. I'm also very excited for my upcoming role in "Grimm", Captain Renard will prove to be quite memorable.

To kick off the Fringe set stalking season, John Pyper-Ferguson was spotted filming episode 4x02 (according to Fringe French Division), which will likely air on September 30.

Updates: Husbands, Comic-Con & cast roundup

One chaotic round of updates coming up.

Jane Espenson has announced the new project she has been working on with Alessandra Torresani, Brad Bell (Cheeks) and Sean Hemeon, in an interview with CliqueClack. Yes, it's Husbands, a web series about "two guys, a newly dating couple, who celebrate a new marriage equality law in Vegas and wake up married." A couple of snippets from the interview:
KM: What do you hope to become of Husbands in the long run? If it simply stays as a free series on the web, will that satisfy not only you but the actors?
JE: Honestly, I would love to see Husbands turn into a network television show. I’m loving the freedom that we’re enjoying as we put it together ourselves, but there’s something about it that feels so accessible — it’s Ab Fab, Dharma and Greg, Will and Grace … it feels to me like it has the broad appeal of so many network shows that I’ve enjoyed, and I’d thrill to see it get the loving care that — right now — only a big broadcast network can afford. If it stayed online, that would be fun too, because it would continue to be our little dream show that we could follow wherever the story takes us. (...)

What do you have planned at Comic-Con this year to show off the new series?
We have a projected launch date in September, so we’re going to be going down to just start getting people talking. The cast and I will be there — so thats me and Brad Bell, aka “Cheeks”, and Alessandra Torresani, and Sean Hemeon. We’re going to be signing and giving away special “wedding invitations” that direct people to our site where they can find more information about the show, and some backstage peeks and hints. And thus the groundswell begins!
For updates and to see the first official promo pic for the show, visit the blog on the Husbands official site.

June wrap: cast updates, new projects & interviews

A frakload of updates today. Let's start in Caprica City.

If you find yourself in Vancouver on Saturday, July 23, you can meet up with fellow BSG & Caprica fans for a guided tour of Kobol. For details, go to The 13th Colony blog.

CNN has a really great article about Ron Moore this week which is mainly about 17th Precinct, but pretty much covers most of his career. Here are a couple of quotes from David Eick and Jane Espenson:
"Ron is the scariest writer I know" his former producing partner recalls.
"I'm not sure there's anything he can't do remarkably well. Even within the context of 'Battlestar,' there was such a wild panoply of styles and emotions -- action, tragedy, melodrama, comedy, philosophy, even music -- all of which I watched him nail."

"But he's also weirdly unpretentious," Eick said. "We'd argue about whether something worked, but never whether or not it was 'good,' because if you tell Ron something's not good, he doesn't take it personally. He just says OK and then does something great."

Moore's sense of flexibility and vision were solidifying his reputation among his cast and crew.
Writer and Executive Producer Jane Espenson first met Moore while pitching show ideas for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as a grad student at UC Berkeley. She later joined "Battlestar's" writing team.

"There could be a million distractions around him -- he could be on a bad phone connection, in an airport, running for a plane, and he'd immediately grasp a complex story as five of us shouted it into a speaker phone, and he'd have the fix," she said.
Moore was acquiring a dedicated following with the show's success. He understood how much the geek culture's acceptance by the mainstream had helped his own success as genre material had made the transformation from niche to widespread commercial viability.

Dean Devlin tweets that Leverage 4x01, with Eric Stoltz, is available on iTunes for free. (Currently being in Coyote Dial-up Nowhere, I can't confirm.)

Esai Morales metioned a new project in the live chat he did on Twitter the other day. No details, except that it's called Beautiful Now and he might be playing a subdued gay character. Esai also posted a clip from the red carpet for Los Americans on his FB page. A new episode, "Secrets," was posted earlier today. You can watch it on PIC.tv.

After getting a standing ovation at the Frameline fest, Gun Hill Road is travelling to Germany, where it will be shown at the Munich International Film Festival this weekend. And NYPress.com has the announcement for the 2011 NewFest:
July 28 – NewFest closes with the parental drama Gun Hill Road. Returning from prison to find his son recast as Vanessa, Esai Morales decides to turn him into a tough man no matter the cost.
The Grimm pilot will be screened at Comic Con, with the cast in attendance. From Hollywood Reporter:
The series, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel writers and executive producers Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, will hold its panel on Saturday, July 23.
Following the screening, a Q&A will be held with Kouf and Greenwalt joined by the cast including David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Reggie Lee and Sasha Roiz.
Io9.com has an article on Tekken, with John Pyper-Ferguson, as well as some clips from the film (no JPF), which will be out on DVD in a few weeks.

Several videos from James Marsters’ Q&A at Supanova 2011 have been posted on YouTube, starting here. There is also a short interview with him at CapsuleComputers.com.

Judas Kiss with Richard Harmon and Genevieve Buechner will get a couple of screenings at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival in August. And Philly Broadcaster has the festival announcement for the Philadelphia QFest, which opens next week (July 7):
This year’s festival kicks off with two opening films: The first, Judas Kiss, is a science-fiction film that tells the story of a washed-up filmmaker who travels back in time to meet his college-aged self. The film has been making festival rounds throughout the country and has consistently been one of the most well-received of the festival season
Kacey Rohl tweets that she is working on The Haunting Hour. IHeartDaily.com has a new Q&A with her. Snippet:
IHD: You've had some dark roles recently! How do you put yourself in the mindset to play those parts?
KR: Prudence in Red Riding Hood came very easily to me, oddly enough. Acting mean (in that way) was easy for me. Sterling in The Killing was more difficult. She was more complex and damaged. For her, I went back to what my time in high school was like and really went to those icky 16-year-old self esteem places. I also used a lot of music to bring me down. The Antlers, The Cinematic Orchestra and I also got my best friend to compile a list of her favorite sad tunes and I used that to make me think of Rosie.
Meanwhile, The Province has a new article about one of Kacey's new films, Sunflower Hour, which includes a short interview with Ben Cotton. Snippet:
Cotton shows comic chops I hadn't seen from him before, handling both sides of an antagonistic relationship between a foul-mouthed guy and his even more colourfully foul-mouthed leprechaun puppet.

The cast took a couple of workshops from veteran puppeteer Jeny Cassady. "One of the things she said that I probably wouldn't have thought about was the puppet's breathing," says Cotton.
"She said if you stop moving, the puppet's dead. Let it breathe, make an inhale and an exhale for it, and always have the puppet be aware and looking, then it stays alive."
Cotton uses that technique in spades, notably in a hotel room scene set after a hookers-and-booze bender, in which his character is passed out but the puppet is awake.
Sunflower Hour will have its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic in July. The film has an official site where you can find all the info you need: www.sunflowerhour.com.

Stuff.co.nz had a great interview with Jamie Bamber last week, in which he talked about 17th Precinct among other things. A snippet or two:
"The saddest thing for us personally was that we were working with the people we had grown to love and respect [on Battlestar] again.

"It didn't work for whatever reason and you don't know. It's not a proven science. It was a difficult subject matter and I guess test audiences didn't quite sort of believe or understand the world that we were trying to create."

Bamber says it was the leadership on Battlestar that made the show such a unique experience.
"I really mean it - Eddie Olmos and Mary McDonnell and to some extent [producer] Michael Rymer as well and Ron.

"Eddie [who played Bamber's father, Bill Adama] is just a guy that creates a family vibe and empowers people. He doesn't feel threatened by them. He gives people confidence and tries to build people up. He created a lot of us, a lot of our younger cast, in particular.
"We were all sort of in a foreign town, which galvanised people to socialise together and the kind of story we were telling was conducive to that. We were all on this adventure together and didn't know which way we were going to be turning next."

While Battlestar finished two years ago, there has already been one short-lived spin-off, Caprica, plus the upcoming prequel series Blood & Chrome centred on a young Bill Adama played by Skins actor Luke Pasqualino.

Bamber's not miffed he wasn't asked to play the junior Adama?
"Oh, God no. Not at all,'' he laughs.

"I don't think I'd have volunteered myself for that. I think that would have been too much and I'm too old. I hear the guy playing it is great. I don't know him myself, but everyone said he did a fantastic job."
And The Morton Report had an article with lots of info on the production of Echoes, the new pilot with Mike Dopud. Here is an update, from Mark Savela (producer):
"[Composer] Joel Goldsmith is working away on the score; his ideas and suggestions are just amazing and we're really looking forward to seeing the finished product. Redlab in Toronto is doing the color correct on the show, while Atmosphere VFX and Darkroom Digital are working away on the VFX."

"We are looking to have the 13-minute pilot presentation and the two-minute trailer finished by the end of June. We've also been working hard behind the scenes, pitching and trying to sell the show. The concept and its players have been very well received out in the market, and we hope to have more announcements very soon."
Guillermo del Toro gave an update the other day on The Hulk remake, which he is producing with David Eick:
Is Hulk still happening?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We turned in the outline to ABC about four weeks ago. And then we did a rewrite for ABC on the outline, and now we are lining up the pages.
Is it safe to assume this will be a different Hulk than we've ever seen before?
I think so. Or we wouldn't be trying it. Actually, one of the points of this project early on with Marvel, was "We're going to do this thing different, and here's how. Are you interested?" And they were.
ABC has announced the premiere dates for its fall shows, among them Jane Espenson's new show, Once Upon a Time, which kicks off on Sunday, October 23 at 8 pm.

Last not least, Torchwood: Miracle Day will premiere in the UK on on July 14th at 9 pm on BBC 1. BBC has put out the UK teaser and a press release for the pilot.

The show kicks off in the U.S. on Starz next Friday (July 8) at 10 pm. You can catch it a free screening in several cities, including Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia and Denver, on July 5. For details, hop over to Facebook.

Here is a new, 11-minute behind-the-scenes preview clip, with Russell T. Davies, John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Bill Pullman and Alexa Havins:
