Caprica soundtrack to be released on July 30

The season one soundtrack is finally coming out, and this time there is a definite release date: July 30. That's this coming Tuesday.

The 2 CD set will be available on LaLaLandRecords.com. Broadway World has the details.

La-La Land Records will release the long awaited soundtrack for CAPRICA: ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK TO THE Syfy TELEVISION SERIES, composed by Bear McCreary (THE WALKING DEAD, MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., DA VINCI'S DEMONS) on July 30, 2013. The soundtrack is a 2CD set, limited edition 3000 units.

"I want to give special thanks to you guys, the CAPRICA fans. You've been so loyal and supportive to our series, and that means a lot to everyone involved," said McCreary. CAPRICA was an amazing new musical journey for me. I've written a National Anthem, a Tauron gangster rap, a drag queen burlesque, and an opera for Alessandro Juliani, just to name a few." -- Keep reading

Blood and Chrome - final two episodes

Machinima has posted the last two episodes of Blood and Chrome today. You can watch them below or on YouTube. And there are a couple of updates after the clip.

Episode 9
In the aftermath of the deadly Cylon ambush, Coker (Ben Cotton) threatens Becca (Lili Bordan), forcing Adama (Luke Pasqualino) to a heated standoff.

Episode 10
Becca discovers a startling new development that will affect the future of the human race. Meanwhile, Coker’s life hangs in the balance as the team holds out hope for a rescue, and Adama has a disheartening realization about the war effort and his place in it.

If you didn't get around to reading the transcript Bear McCreary's AMA on Reddit from last Friday, here is what you've missed:
Is there any update on what's happening with the Caprica soundtrack? There's so many wonderful tracks from it that I want to listen to properly.
Hey cube1701... this is a great question. First, a little background on how I deal with albums. As you guys probably know, I put a lot of time and energy into them and make sure that they are great listening experiences, not just a collection of cues that were mixed for broadcast. This approach resulted in some great BSG albums, and a great album for the Caprica pilot.

caprica
The rest of the series was no exception. I assembled a collection of the best cues into suites, re-recorded, re-mixed and re-mastered a fantastic double disc album. It's done, and it's been done for a while.

However, Caprica's swift demise and slim ratings made it difficult to get this album released. I can't move forward on anything like that without involvement from NBC Universal and for a long time, there was little interest in working on an album for a show that was no longer on the air. (For the BSG records, we always had the promotion of the following season or DVD release to piggy-back on for album promotion).

So, the bad news is that no album has come out yet. But, the good news is that we're beginning to make some real progress now. NBC Universal is showing interest in letting me release this music.

The best thing fans can do is continue to show their support and enthusiasm for the idea. I'm confident we can make it happen, as long as the fans make it clear to the powers-that-be that they want it.

How can we show NBC Universal that we're interested? The scores for Caprica's first season (particularly the second half of the season) are some of my favorite cues you've ever written. It would make my week to see a release. :)
Trust me. You guys are helping right now. People who can help make the Caprica album a reality are watching what's happening right now. Keep it up!

I know a CD release of Caprica is tied up at the moment, but what's the word on a release of Blood & Chrome?
Plans are afoot.

Hey Bear. Is there any indication that Blood and Chrome will have a life beyond the single movie? Just hearing the BSG style of music again gives me pangs for a weekly intake. Also, say hi to Erin, Todd and Nova if you talk to Erin any time soon.
As far as I know, there are no concrete plans right now. But, it also seems that everyone is open to the idea. Fans have a say in this, though. Enough views on Machinima, enough views in February when it airs, and / or enough DVD sales when it comes out in February can all make a difference. Everybody tune in, because we're all ready to make more of these!

Tons more about Bear's work on BSG, The Walking Dead, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Defiance (coming in April), and everything else at Reddit.

Ben Cotton and Mike Dopud were on The Rush last week. They talked about Blood and Chrome, and also about season two of Arctic Air - they will both be appearing in it. Here is the clip:

The Killing season two and weekly wrap

The Killing is back tonight at 8 pm ET with a two-hour season premiere. Caprica and BSG folks who are definitely returning this season include Richard Harmon, Brian Markinson, Michelle Forbes and Callum Keith Rennie.

Andrew Airlie will also be recurring as "Dr. Madigan," and Kacey Rohl and Tahmoh Penikett might also make an appearance, but I haven't seen anything that would confirm this. TV Equals has a clip and the promotional photos from the premiere.

Also back tonight with a second season, Game of Thrones (9 pm). HBO has announced that the trailer for the new season of True Blood will be shown before the premiere. Let's see if they give us a first look at Christopher Heyerdahl's character.

James Pizzinato plays the prisoner of the week in Alcatraz tonight, in episode 1x06, "Paxton Petty."

They're forced to apply methods from the past to their pursuit in the new episode "Paxton Petty." Robert Forster and Parminder Nagra also star.
Previews posted below.

The Nervous Breakdown has a new interview with Bear McCreary. Here are a few snippets (more at the link):
From what or whom do you derive your greatest inspiration?
My inspiration comes from so many different sources that it’s impossible to say. Ideas can come from just talking to someone or flipping through the radio. Ideas are the sum of everything on your mind at any given time. But, of the professionals in my industry whom I’ve been fortunate enough to know, the most influential on me personally was Elmer Bernstein.

Grimm 1x11, "Tarantella," airs tonight at 9 pm. (No, Patton Oswalt and Steve Carell aren't guest starring. Keep scrolling for those two.) Synopsis for "Tarantella:"
A STRING OF HOMICIDES LEADS NICK AND HANK TO A WOMAN WITH A DEADLY SECRET; AMY ACKER GUEST STARS – Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby) find themselves on the hunt for a deadly heartbreaker leaving behind a web of dead bodies. Blackstone season two premiere, Arctic Air videos, interviews with Leah Gibson, Christopher Heyerdahl, Patton Oswalt and Bear McCreary

A quick round of updates.

Netflix has finally launched in UK and Ireland and both Caprica and Battlestar are available for streaming. If you know people there who haven't seen the shows, you can nag them to do it now, while Netflix is offering a free month of trials.

Blackstone, with Carmen Moore, returns with the season two opener, "Blood Is Thicker Than Water," tonight on APTN in Canada. The episode should air at 9 pm ET on APTN East, West, and HD, and at 8 pm PT, but check your local listings to be sure.

Carmen Moore was also one of the people who made an appearance in Arctic Air yesterday. If you haven't seen the pilot, check it out. There are more BSG people in the first five minutes of that show than there were in the opening scenes of BSG. And they share scenes and everything.

The Vancouver Sun has some pics from the red carpet premiere. Here is a clip from the set that includes a short interview with Leah Gibson and a bunch of scenes from the pilot:

Friday round-up: previews, cast interviews and new projects

This is the first part of the weekend monster update, with more news & stuff coming in the next couple of days.

I got my Grimms confused in yesterday's post as it turns out. Tonight's episode won't be "Let Your Hair Down," but "The Three Bad Wolves." Rapunzel doesn't show up until next week.
Nick (David Giuntoli) is called to a suspected arson case, which exposes a longstanding family feud that brings Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) face-to-face with characters from his troubled past. While Monroe wrestles with restraining his wild side, it’s up to Nick to keep everything from going up in flames. Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Sasha Roiz and Reggie Lee also star.
There are a few sneak peeks at THR and Dread Central. Spoiler TV has the promotional stills. Here is the teaser:

Leah Gibson has been cast in American Mary, a new horror from the sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska, who will also direct it.

The film follows the story of a medical student, played by Katharine Isabelle, "who is growing increasingly broke and disenchanted with the medical school she attends and the established doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends her into the messy world of underground surgeries, which leaves more marks on her than her so-called freakish clientele."

Born to Race, John Pyper-Ferguson's new film, is going to the Cannes Film Festival. More updates on Facebook.

Friday wrap: Bear McCreary & cast updates

A few scattered updates today.

CapriCast has posted a video review of Caprica 1x15, "The Dirteaters." You can find it here.

Teresa Jusino over at Tor.com has a new interview with Bear McCreary. It's mostly about his work on Human Target last season, but he also mentioned some interesting things about the BSG piano book, Caprica score in season 1.5, and the possibility of the Caprica Season One soundtrack being released:

Will there be themes from Battlestar Galactica incorporated into upcoming episodes of Caprica? Will there be a connection musically as the show progresses?

Bear McCreary: Connection musically, yes. Themes, no. I will say this: starting very soon, the episodes of Caprica take a noticeable shift and the writing and the acting and editing and music is going to get tighter and more focused, and it begins a story arc that takes us to the end of the season. And you’re going to see that the music is going to shift and there is going to be a familiarity in that shift. That’s probably all I’ll say right now, but there are some cool musical surprises on the horizon for Caprica.

Will there be a Caprica soundtrack released that features the opening theme?

Bear McCreary: I suspect that yes, there will. I can say that the guys at La La Land Records and I are talking about this, and the more that we sell Human Target CDs, the more we can make the case to the higher-ups that we wanna release a Caprica Season One. So we hope that Human Target does as well as we think it’s gonna do.

You can read the rest of the interview here. Note: Human Target is back this Wednesday at 9 pm on Fox. Bear isn't scoring the show anymore, but Tahmoh Penikett will make an appearance in the season opener. And The Walking Dead still airs Sundays at 10 pm on AMC.

Aleks Paunovic is on Supernatural tonight (Friday) at 9 pm on the CW network. You can find the synopsis, previews and pictures from the set at TheWinchesterFamilyBusiness.com.

Alessandra Torresani will be hosting Attack of the Show again this Tuesday. And you might wanna check out her blog, too. She posted the trailer for Annie Goes Boating, a short film she did last year, which is now available at VideoHippy.com.

Sasha Roiz has posted a couple of pictures from the set of Extracted on Twitpic.

Rabid Doll has a new interview with Ryan Robbins, mostly about Sanctuary (new episode airs tonight at 10 pm), and Airlock Alpha talked to him about Riese.

This week's episode of Hellcats, with Magda Apanowicz, Teryl Rothery, Ben Cotton and Aaron Douglas will be available one of these days at CWTV.com.

Magda's next episode, "Think Twice Before You Go," will air on December 1.

Ryan Kennedy and Ben Cotton are back on the show next Wednesday (Nov. 17) in episode 1x10, "Pledging My Love." TV Overmind has the press release and promo.

And Jorge Montesi may or may not be on Outlaw tomorrow (Saturday, 8 pm, NBC).

Campaign news and cast updates

A bunch of updates today.

The Thirteenth Colony has a recap and review of episode 1x14, "Blowback." If you're looking for spoilers, that's the place to go.

Ro_Me over at the Save Caprica blog has set a tentative deadline for donations for the apple campaign and it's this Tuesday. The campaign has been getting some press coverage, so keep an eye on her blog for updates.

Syfy has posted a statement about the show's cancellation on Caprica's official Facebook page. There is also a very good response over at Virgil's All-Night Diner. The only real news is that the announcement for the last five episodes and when they are coming back will appear on the Facebook page first, which may have over 103,000 fans, but isn't exactly a regular hangout for the media looking for news.

The Caprica Times tweeted a couple of links to some interesting articles at TV Tropes, which might shed some light on the reasons why networks sometimes frak around with shows, with a lengthy list of examples. See: Screwed by the Network and Follow Up Failure.

For a good farce, you can also check out Craig Engler (@syfy), senior VP of Syfy Digital, pat himself on the back for the great job he has done debunking conspiracy theories and rumours that said moving Caprica and Stargate Universe from Fridays to Tuesdays was a kiss of death to both shows, in a new article: 10 Reasons Every TV Exec Needs to Start Tweeting (see reason #2).

Other fronts:

Total Sci-Fi Online posted an interview with Eric Stoltz the other day that seems to be recent. I can't really decide on which part to lift, so hit the link.

Shadowlocked has a nice, long interview with Bear McCreary that is mostly about Human Target, but he also talks about Battlestar and Caprica. Here is a quote (go here for the rest):

With regard to Caprica, do you regret the show has come to an end so soon?

I’ll regret that we don’t get to go forward with these characters and learn more about them, but at the same time I have no regrets about the work we did. I think the work we did was exceptional, so a little bit of regret that we don’t get to do more of it. I think everybody involved made the absolute best show they could, but for whatever reason, whatever factors there were, that caused people not to tune in the same way they did for Battlestar, it wasn’t for lack of trying. I think everybody on the show did a great job, and I’m very proud of the soundtrack album of the pilot I had out.

I’m hoping we get to put out another album of the music I did for the series. It’s certainly a world that has a lot of life left in it. Whether or not they ask me to do Blood & Chrome, I really hope the series exists and continues to move the Battlestar Galactica story forward.

There is another interview with him on MTV's Splash Page, in which he talks about his work on The Walking Dead. The show airs Sundays at 10 pm on AMC.

PitchEngine.com has more details about Los Americans, the web series Esai Morales is working on, and Screen Crave has the final trailer for the movie Cherry, also with Esai, which opened in New York yesterday.

Paula Malcomson will appear in an upcoming episode of Lie to Me. Executive producer Daniel Sackheim tweeted a couple of pictures from the set here and here. The episode is called "Funhouse," SpoilerTV has it listed as episode 3x09, but no word yet on when it will air. Paula will also be back on The Event this Monday at 9 pm on NBC. SpoilerTV has a bunch of promotional pics.

Alessandra Torresani will be hosting Attack of the Show this Tuesday. She has also started a new blog, The Bambola Factory.

Still no details on which episode of Off the Map Eric Stoltz directed, but ABC scheduled the show's premiere for Wednesday, January 12 at 10 pm. SpoilerTV has some episode titles.

Magda Apanowicz tweeted that her first episode of Hellcats airs next week (she has filmed two so far). TV Overmind has the previews and stills (no Magda, but Aaron Douglas is in them).

Die, with John Pyper-Ferguson, doesn't have release date yet after all, but the trailer is finally out. You can watch it on The Cultural Post's site. And SpoilerTV has a sneak peek from Castle 3x08, "Murder Most Fowl," which airs on Monday at 9 pm on ABC.

The Arts Club Theatre Company posted a media release for The Patron Saint of Stanley Park, a new play written by Hiro Kanagawa, which opens on November 25 in Vancouver.

Leah Gibson mentioned on Twitter that her next job will be a TV movie with Heather Locklear. (Google says Locklear's next film is He Loves Me, a psychological thriller for Lifetime. Could be something else, though, so you can follow Leah on Twitter for more updates.)

Daydream Nation, with Genevieve Buechner, has been picked up by Anchor Bay Films for release next year. You can see the trailer here.

James Marsters will be Mr. Fantastic in Marvel's Super Hero Squad Show, which airs on the Cartoon Network on November 13.

Richard Harmon will have a recurring role in AMC new series The Killing, which premieres next year. You can find more info and the teaser on the official site for the Judas Kiss movie.

Missed this earlier, but Aleks Paunovic said on his Facebook page that he was working on This Means War, McG's romantic comedy with Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy.

Finally, Ryan Robbins, who is just about everywhere this week. He talked to Examiner about Marilyn, an indie he's been working on that will be released next year. Wrecked, a thriller he did with Adrien Brody, will be released in the spring. And at least one site claims that he is in Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch (no IMDb credit, though). The trailer has been making the rounds on movie blogs lately and it's nuts (great cast too). [Update: No, he is not in Sucker Punch after all. See this tweet for reference.] Last not least, you can still catch Ryan on Sanctuary and Riese every week.

And that wraps it up for today.

10 days to go until Caprica returns - a new round of updates

With only 10 days left before Caprica returns, different news bits are coming in from different places and hopefully there will be more of them in the next couple of weeks. Syfy has sent out screeners for episodes 1x10, "Unvanquished," and 1x11, "Retribution," to a bunch of TV bloggers and journalists, so we'll probably be seeing some reviews soon enough. Until then, here is another quick round of updates:

Michael Hinman (Airlock Alpha) has tweeted the writing and directing credits for the next two episodes. "Unvanquished" was written by Ryan Mottesheard and directed by Eric Stoltz, and "Retribution" was written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman (who had previously written the episode that introduced Vergis, "Know Thy Enemy") and directed by Jonas Pate.

Doug Drexler (CGI supervisor) has posted the Caprica 2010 Emmy Presentation Book over at Drex Files.

Some cast updates:
  • Sasha Roiz tweeted that he is currently filming an episode of House. No details yet, but in the meantime, you can catch him on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation next Thursday.
  • Alessandra Torresani has wrapped filming Playback.
  • Leah Gibson is doing a new indie film, Camera Shy, and she also mentioned working with Tom Welling (possibly on Smallville?)
  • Hiro Kanagawa, who guest stars on Fringe next week, is currently doing a production of Tear the Curtain! in Vancouver. If you're in the area, you can find the details and see the trailer here.
  • Peter Wingfield tweeted that he will appear in an upcoming episode of Sanctuary.
  • TV Guide visited the set of Glee, where they caught up with Eric Stoltz among others. The report is here.
  • SpoilerTV has posted the synopsis for Smallville 10x04, "Homecoming," with James Marsters guest starring

SFX magazine has opened voting for the SFX Sci-Fi Awards 2010. Caprica isn't nominated in all the categories, but it's easy enough to write it in. A couple of acting categories could definitely use our attention. You can vote here.

Caprica City has some more stills from the mid-season premiere here.

Two really interesting interviews showed up in recent days. They aren't really related to Caprica, but you might wanna check them out anyway.

Bear McCreary talked to TV Overmind about his work on Human Target. The soundtrack is out in October. You can read the interview here.

Fandomania included an audio interview with Edward James Olmos in their Sept. 20 podcast. Among other things, he talks about how he got involved in Battlestar Galactica, the parallels between BSG and Blade Runner, his experience directing The Plan, working on The Green Hornet movie, and reading Ray Kurzweil. EJO will be back on TV in an episode of CSI: NY in October.

Last but not least, Stargate Universe, Caprica's lead-in, is back for a second season on Tuesday, September 28 at 9 PM. Without a major advertising push for Caprica, the ratings will largely depend on how SGU does, so we'll probably get a better idea of where both shows stand with Nielsen viewers this week. Stargate will be up against NCIS: Los Angeles, Dancing with the Stars, Raising Hope and (later also) In Treatment, while Caprica will air against Sons of Anarchy, The Good Wife, Detroit 1-8-7 and Parenthood. To see how those shows, as well as the hiatus-bound Warehouse 13, did this week, go to TVbytheNumbers: broadcast ratings, cable ratings.

And here is the Re-Cap(rica) clip (in case you missed it everywhere else):

Syfy Video still has the recaps episode by episode. You can find them here.

For full episodes (from 1x05, "There Is Another Sky," to 1x09, "End of the Line"), you can go to Syfy Rewind or Hulu.

Caprica news roundup - interviews, articles, reviews

Okay, with the show premiering this evening, a whole bunch of news, reviews and interviews showed up in the last couple of days. Here are some links:

L.A. Times has a couple of new interviews as part of their Caprica countdown.

Magda Apanowicz:

The old standby question: Were you a fan of "Battlestar Galactica" before joining "Caprica?"
I made a conscientious decision not to watch it until after we filmed the pilot. I was one of those people that looked at it and said, "Eh, I'm not really a sci-fi fan," but holy! I went back and watched it and I'm like "Holy!" How did I not know that this show existed in my life! It was unreal. I just recently watched the whole series again. It's so good. I can't believe that I was one of those people who said "I'm not really a sci-fi fan."

I saw you at the screening of the "Battlestar" finale at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences last year, talking to "Caprica" [executive producer] Jane Espenson. What have you learned from working with her?
Yeah. You saw me bowing to her because I am a huge "Buffy" fan, again from someone who said they weren't into sci-fi. Though I've realized over the past few years that I am a massive sci-fi fan. Pretty much every one of my favorite movies is sci-fi. Everything I've worked on is sci-fi. And meeting Jane Espenson was just jaw-dropping, not talking just in awe. I was like "You're Jane Espenson and you worked on 'Buffy' and how was that and that's awesome and you're awesome and this is awesome." There was more actual conversation once we got past that. I just felt really honored to meet her. Keep reading

David Eick:

So how long ago did the idea for "Caprica" actually come about?
The first time that myself, Ron Moore and Remi Aubuchon got together to discuss it was was five years ago. It's crazy cause it doesn't seem that long. Ron and I came from these franchises that had spawned offspring. In Ron's case it was "Star Trek" and in mine it was the "Hercules"/"Xena" world. At some point during the second season of "Battlestar," we started kicking around the idea of another story rooted in this world. We started kicking around the idea of a more human-based, terrestrial-based soap opera with a sci-fi undertone that would take place in the years before the events that were depicting in "Battlestar." In affect, it would be Dallas where the McGuffin would be artificial intelligence instead of oil.

We had a general conversation with execs at Universal, then we tabled it as we continued to make "Battlestar." We got a call from those execs some time later and they said that at some point in time they heard a pitch from Remi Aubuchon that they felt crossed paths in many ways with what we'd talked about for our "Battlestar" prequel. It just made sense to Ron and I to have another partner since we were so into just making "Battlestar" at the time. So we sat down with Remi and started to hammer out where this spinoff would be.

So I don't really need to ask if it was a harder sell than the original 'reimagined' "Battlestar" premise?
Our reimagined "Battlestar" premise was held back by a couple of things at different stages. One was title, which was a blessing and a curse. It opened certain doors, but there's a whole contingent ... who would not watch a show called "Battlestar Galactica" no matter how many trophies you win. And Bonnie Hammer said to me, 'You're gonna have to explain to me again when you come in to pitch this why the world needs another space opera.' And I think we did.

In this case, we had a leg up, you could say. We were coming at the "Battlestar" mythos at what did not feel like a lot of other shows. As unique as "Battlestar" is, it's still easy to lump it in with "Stargate" and "Star Trek" and "Andromeda" and I can't even name them all. Whereas with "Caprica" I think we're operating in very unique territory. Keep reading
