Caprica soundtrack update & cast news

To start off, some much awaited news about the season one soundtrack. Bear McCreary tweeted that he is working on a new Caprica album. No details or tentative release dates yet, but it seems to be happening and you can follow Bear on Twitter for updates as they come.

And on the film/TV/theatre front:

The nominations for the Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards were announced last week and several Caprica actors are on the nominees list.

Hiro Kanagawa has been nominated for Outstanding Original Script for his play, The Patron Saint of Stanley Park. Also nominated, Tom McBeath (GDD's Agent Alpert) for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role for Death of a Salesman (Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company) and Dmitry Chepovetsky (Cerberus) for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for This (also Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company). The Arts Club Theatre Company's production of Glengarry Glen Ross, with John Pyper-Ferguson and Brian Markinson, has been nominated for Outstanding Production - Large Theatre, and Tear the Curtain! with Hiro Kanagawa has scored 11 nominations across the categories. Congratulations to all!

Alessandra Torresani is working on a new show. No word on what it is yet, but she posted a photo on her blog.

Fort McCoy with Eric Stoltz has won Best Drama at the Cannes Independent Film Festival.

Gun Hill Road with Esai Morales will open the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival on June 16. Details at Frameline.org.

Grimm, with Sasha Roiz, will continue to be filmed in Portland after all. Daily Journal writes that production is scheduled to start in mid-July.

Homorazzi has a review of last week's The True Heroines live performance, with Leah Gibson, as well as a bunch of pics from the show.

Kacey Rohl tweeted that she wrapped filming Ghost Storm, a new Syfy disaster flick. According to The Chief's Deck, Aaron Douglas is also in it.

Caprica season 1.5 DVD gets a UK release date

Gun Hill Road with Esai Morales will be shown at the Inside Out Film Festival in Toronto tomorrow (Tuesday, May 24) at 7:15. Details and tickets at InsideOut.ca. Last week, the film was selected to open the Outfest -- it will be screened at the Orpheum Theatre in L.A. on July 7.

Los Americans premieres on PIC.tv in a couple of days. There are a bunch of behind-the-scenes photos on the show's Facebook page.

Adult Swim has picked up a new show with Patton Oswalt for the fall. Here is the description, from Collider:

The Heart, She Holler is a new live-action soap opera about folk who ain’t never used soap or seen an opera. It’s a satire on the emotional Hee-Hawification of America, set in a town so inbred, the folks have become almost supernaturally wrong. The series is produced by PFFR, and stars Patton Oswalt and Heather Lawless. The Heart, She Holler premieres this fall on Adult Swim.

In not-so-good news, United States of Tara won't be returning next season.

Jane Espenson joins Once Upon a Time

A bunch of stuff has happened since yesterday.

First, an update on Alessandra Torresani's new movie, Playback, from Dread Central (hit the link for more info):

Bennett Robbins Productions has completed post-production of Playback, an independent horror thriller starring Toby Hemingway, Johnny Pacar, Ambyr Childers, Jonathan Keltz, Alessandra Torresani, Jennifer Missoni, and featuring Christian Slater. The producers are currently seeking distribution of the film.

The film features music from The Sounds, Shiny Toy Guns, AWOLNation, innerpartysystem, My Passion, Kill Hannah, High Tension Wires, K.Flay, Guadalupe Plata, Carol Bui, Youth Mass, and Playback star Johnny Pacar's own band Forever the Day.

Synopsis - While digging into their town’s infamous past, a group of high school students unwittingly unlock an even darker secret. Now an evil spirit has been awakened to possess and destroy its victims through video playback, stopping at nothing to find his true heir.

Frak Earth has an interesting snippet about 17th Precinct:

As of the time this article was written, NBC has yet to say yes or no to the Ron D. Moore futuristic drama. Most online journalist are claiming that Precinct won't be picked up because NBC picked up Grimm, which is a cop drama, which is produced by Buffy and Angel alums! I talked to Tricia Helfer at WizardWorld a few weeks ago, and asked her what would happen if Precinct didn't get picked up. She said there was a possibility that Syfy might be able to broadcast it, just because NBC owns SyFy.

There is a new screening date for Judas Kiss, with Richard Harmon and Genevieve Buechner: June 6 at the 13th Annual Fort Worth, Texas, Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival.

Zap2it has an interview with Sean Hayes, one of the executive producers on Grimm. Hit the link to see the entire clip. A snippet from the article:

Despite the fairy-tale hook, though, "Once Upon a Time" and "Grimm" are pretty different shows. Hayes explains that "Grimm" is basically a cop show: "We're saying the Brothers Grimm are profilers, and they wrote these stories down to warn us about things that are going to happen in a cryptic form. So our lead [David Giuntoli] is a descendent of the Grimm family and is going to solve all these crimes of the week based on these fairy tales."

Oregon Live reports that there is a chance that the show won't be filmed in Portland after all.

Zap2it also has a report from the press junket Kevin Murphy and the Hellcats cast did a few weeks ago that sheds some light on what season two would have looked like.

Movie Mikes has a new interview with Aleks Paunovic. Here is a snippet about Mortal Kombat: Legacy:

MG: Where you familiar with character of Shao Kahn before this project?
AP: I was and I was apprehensive about doing that role. I didn’t quite understand how I would fit in the mold. It was so great the route that Kevin took “Rebirth” and with “Legacy” opened where this project can go with his fresh vision. I was scared at first if the fans of “Mortal Kombat” would jump on board with me being Shao Kahn. Once I understood the vision Kevin had I was very comfortable and confident playing him.

MG: What do you like most about the character?
AP: Kevin was one a shoe string budget and we were just trying to understand it. For me, just knowing the immense popularity of that role and basically the baddest bad guy. In this we find in Kevin’s vision how bad Shao Kahn can be and how involved the character can do. That to me was excited knowing that from the ground floor you can get some really good character development.

Jane Espenson tweeted earlier that she has a new job, on ABC's Once Upon a Time, which premieres this fall. Here is ABC's description:

And they all lived happily ever after – or so everyone was led to believe. Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. She's a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who's been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Of course Emma doesn't believe a word, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she finds herself drawn to this unusual boy and his strange New England town. Concerned for Henry, she decides to stay for a while, but she soon suspects that Storybrooke is more than it seems. It's a place where magic has been forgotten, but is still powerfully close… where fairytale characters are alive, even though they don't remember who they once were. The epic battle for the future of all worlds is beginning, but for good to win, Emma will have to accept her destiny and fight like hell.

Jennifer Morrison stars as Emma, Ginnifer Goodwin plays Snow White, Josh Dallas is Prince Charming, Lana Parrilla appears as the Evil Queen and Robert Carlyle as Rumpelstiltskin. The show was created by Lost's Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.

This year marks the beginning of production of the final season of the blockbuster hit The Closer, starring Emmy® winner Kyra Sedgwick. TNT confirmed today that it has ordered a 10-episode season of Major Crimes, a series set in the Los Angeles Police Department that promises to become television’s next great crime drama. The seventh and final season of The Closer will include 15 episodes in 2011 and six in summer 2012, leading into the launch of Major Crimes, starring Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica). McDonnell has been featured on The Closer as Capt. Raydor, who was often on a collision course with Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, played by Sedgwick. Major Crimes will be executive-produced by James Duff, creator of The Closer, along with Greer Shephard and Michael M. Robin. Major Crimes and The Closer come to TNT from Warner Bros. Television.

Patton Oswalt has been cast in a new romantic comedy, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Here are a few snippets from the press release:

Hellcats finale airs tonight

A few quick updates.

The Hellcats finale airs tonight at 9 pm on the CW. From the previews and IMDB credits, Magda Apanowicz, Teryl Rothery, Ben Cotton and John Pyper-Ferguson should all appear in it. The episode was written by Kevin Murphy and directed by Omar Madha.

This will be the last episode of Hellcats. The CW has made it official -- the show is not getting a second season. Hope the cast and crew land new gigs soon. Tuesday nights won't be the same without you, Hellcats.

The network has also announced its new shows today and Hart of Dixie with Scott Porter is one of them. Here is how THR describes it:

The doctor drama centers on a young New York doctor (The O.C.’s Rachel Bilson) after she inherits a medical practice in a small Southern town inhabited by eccentrics. The project comes from Fake Empire’s Josh Schwartz (O.C., Gossip Girl, Chuck), Stephanie Savage (OC, Gossip Girl) and Len Goldstein. Frequent collaborators Leila Gerstein (OC, Gossip Girl) will write and executive produce with fellow executive producer Jason Ensler (Chuck, Gossip Girl) who directed the pilot.

Meanwhile, Starz has released some new info on Torchwood: Miracle Day, which kicks off in July. The guest stars this season will include Nana Visitor, John de Lancie, Ernie Hudson, Mare Winningham and Frances Fisher. You can read the press release on Jim Halterman's blog.

Grimm, Los Americans, Showrunners and other updates

To start off, a reminder to the UK fans that Caprica is back with the second half of the season tonight on Sky1.

There are a couple of new screening dates for Gun Hill Road with Esai Morales and Fort McCoy with Eric Stoltz.

Weekend wrap

To start with the good news, Sasha Roiz will be back on TV every week this fall. His new show, Grimm, has been picked up to series by NBC. Spoiler TV has the first still from the pilot, which was written and exec produced by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, and we'll probably get more details about the show after the upfronts. For now, here are the basics, from TV Line:

A fantastical drama, Grimm stars David Giuntoli (Privileged) as a detective whose mission is to protect humans living in a world where Grimm’s Fairy Tale characters actually exist. Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break), Sasha Roiz (Caprica) and Kate Burton also star.

The bad news from NBC is that 17th Precinct didn't make the cut. Not much to add that hasn't been said at the Battlestar Blog.

David E. Kelley's take on Wonder Woman hasn't been picked up either. (Jeff Reiner directed the pilot.) Deadline has an article on if/how this could affect David Eick's remake of Hulk for ABC.

The Orange Country Register talked to Eric Stoltz about Glee. Snippet:

Orange County Register: What is it like directing the young cast of ‘Glee’?
Eric Stoltz: It’s fantastic. It’s the most fun I’ve had in a long time. I love directing young actors. Many actors have the experience of not having been directed very often or very well. For the most part, directors are technically proficient and a little bit afraid of the actors. So, having been an actor for a long time, I can see things from their perspective.

Directing is something that I think i’m more suited for. I’m a better director than an actor. I love crews, I love talking to actors. After sitting in the trumpet section for many years, it’s nice to have the whole score in front of you. You can either inspire or not. I’ve spent a great many years in the trenches of independent film. You learn a lot there. Television is actually much closer to the independent film process.

Judas Kiss, with Richard Harmon and Genevieve Buechner, is getting screened at the Boston LGBT Film Festival tonight and there is a new festival date for the film: June 4 at Out Twin Cities, Minnesota’s Second Annual GLBTQ Film Festival in Minneapolis.

Judas Kiss got picked up by a couple of distributors this week. Wolfe Video has bought the DVD/VOD rights for North America and Pro-Fun Media picked the film up for distribution in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. More at the Judas Kiss blog.

Michael Rymer's Face to Face keeps winning stuff at festivals. This month alone, it won Jury Awards for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress at the Newport Beach fest and, just the other day, it also won a couple of prizes at the Monaco Charity Film Festival (Best Film, Best Ensemble Cast). Episodes titles for Torchwood: Miracle Day have been revealed. They are: The New World, Rendition, Dead of Night, Escape to L.A, The Categories of Life, The Middle Men, Immortal Sins, End of the Road, The Gathering and The Blood Line. The show premieres on July 8 on Starz. Spoiler TV has some cool new cast promotional photos, but I can't post a direct link because Blogger has been randomly frakking with permalinks these days, so do a search in the image gallery to see them.

Deadline writes that Falling Skies will probably get picked up for a second season next month. TNT will make the definite decision when the show premieres (June 19) and, in the meantime, they have hired Remi Aubuchon to assemble the writing staff since most of the writers who worked on season one have moved on to other projects (the show was picked up a while ago, in January 2010). Here is a snippet from Deadline:

Aubuchon admits that trying to put together a writing staff for a cable show is difficult as hiring falls outside of the normal network staffing cycle and not many scribes are available, but he believes that Falling Skies has an extra draw. "Steven (Spielberg) is very involved in the show, which is one of his pet projects; he has a lot of passion for it," he said. "I think it is exciting to work with him, and I think a lot of writers would be looking forward to that." WME-repped Aubuchon started off working on character-driven dramas, including Chicago Hope, 24, Summerland and The Lyon's Den, which he created, before gravitating toward genre shows. "In the last few years, I've been trying to combine my training in character drama and figure out a way to assimilate that into the genre world, and I think I had some success with Caprica," he said.

The Leo nominations & new Caprica story

The nominations for the Canadian Leo Awards have been announced today and several Caprica and BSG actors scored nods in different categories, for different projects. The Leos are presented by the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia.

Genevieve Buechner has been nominated for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series, for her work in Caprica 1x05, "There Is Another Sky." Huge congratulations to Genevieve and everyone else who has been nominated.

A Night for Dying Tigers, with Leah Gibson and John Pyper-Ferguson, scored seven, including Best Direction, Screenwriting, Cinematography, and Production Design.

Amazon Falls, with Zak Santiago and William B. Davis, earned two nominations, for Best Lead & Best Supporting Performance by a Female (April Telek and Anna Mae Routledge).

Two Indians Talking, starring Carmen Moore, who is also credited as associate producer, is also up for a couple of Leos (Best Screenwriting, Best Lead Performance by a Male).

The Hostage, with Aleks Paunovic and Tahmoh Penikett, has received nominations for Best Performance by a Female in a Short Drama (Chelah Horsdal), Best Makeup and Best Overall Sound.

And on the TV front, Blackstone, Sanctuary and Smallville are all up for Best Dramatic Series.

New projects for Magda Apanowicz and Esai Morales, Sasha Roiz guest stars on Castle tonight

All right, this week, everyone either has a new job or guest stars in something. Or both.

Let's start with what's on TV tonight.

• Castle 3x23, "Pretty Dead," with Sasha Roiz, airs at 10 pm on ABC.
• Patton Oswalt is probably on United States of Tara again at 10:30 pm on Showtime.
• The very last episode of Stargate Universe airs at 9 pm on Syfy. IMDB says that Mike Dopud is in it.
• Ryan Robbins and Christopher Heyerdahl are on Sanctuary at 10 pm, as usual.

And tomorrow:

• Magda Apanowicz is back on Hellcats at 9 pm on the CW.
• Glee kids go to the prom at 8 pm on Fox. The episode was directed by Eric Stoltz. (Side note here: Just caught up with last week's Glee and that episode was directed by Tim Hunter.)

More cast updates:

Esai Morales and Magda Apanowicz are both working on new films for Syfy.

According to the IMDb, Esai will star in Seattle Superstorm, a sci-fi disaster film that started shooting in Vancouver a little over a month ago. There is still not much info about it out there. Meanwhile, Gun Hill Road is still doing festival rounds and will get a couple of screenings at the Seattle International Film Festival at the end of the month. Details at SIFF.com.

Magda Apanowicz has confirmed on Twitter that she recently wrapped Snowmageddon, also a disaster flick for Syfy. A press release released in March describes it as "a story about a mystical snow globe that makes very bad things happen in the real world when it is shaken." The film will air in December.

Patton Oswalt will voice a character on the new season of Futurama, which kicks off in June. There is a picture of the character here.

Eric Stoltz will be appearing on Wilfred after all. Victor Nelli, who directed the episode, pretty much confirmed it on Twitter the other day. It will be one of the episodes in the second half of the season and will probably air some time in late August.

Bear McCreary has announced that he will be at the 7th International Film Music Festival Ciudad de Úbeda in Spain in July. Here is what he says on his blog (there is more, hit the link):

I was nominated for four of the festival’s Goldspirit Awards, including BEST COMPOSER and BEST SCORE. I am truly honored to be awarded BEST TELEVISION SCORE for my work on “Human Target.”

I will take part in the Úbeda festival in a number of exciting programs. On July 21st, I will conduct a chamber orchestra in an intimate recital setting. This up close and personal concert will feature world-premiere arrangements of music from “Caprica,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” ‘The Walking Dead” and “Battlestar Galactica.“

Leah Gibson has been cast in American Mary, a new horror from the sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska, who will also direct it.

The film follows the story of a medical student, played by Katharine Isabelle, "who is growing increasingly broke and disenchanted with the medical school she attends and the established doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends her into the messy world of underground surgeries, which leaves more marks on her than her so-called freakish clientele."

Magda Apanowicz is back on Hellcats tonight

A regular round of Tuesday updates:

Magda Apanowicz guest stars in tonight's episode of Hellcats, "Warped Sister" (9 pm, CW) and she'll be back on the show next week, too. Daemon's TV has the preview and photos.

Hellcats has only three episodes left this season. The show still hasn't been picked up and, since it came back from the break, it has been chalking Caprica's Friday night ratings. (If you're a fan, it's probably time to start spreading the word.)

A quick update on Eric Stoltz appearing on Wilfred, since the news was picked up by Spoiler TV, several other sites, and even Wilfred the Dog himself -- the original tweet from the show's casting director has been removed, so possibly daddy Graystone won't be making that appearance after all. (Thanks to the visitor who pointed this out.)

In more verified Stoltz news, he definitely did make an appearance at the Fort McCoy screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival over the weekend. There are pictures to prove it. And his episode of Glee airs a week from now.

Michael Rymer is also at the Newport Beach fest this week with Face to Face. He will be at the Q&A tonight and, if you're in the area, there will be another screening on May 5.

Less than a week from today, Sasha Roiz guest stars on Castle. ABC has released the teaser (without Sasha, you can see it on TVFanatic.com) and there is also a sneak peek on Spoiler TV (embedded):



ScriptShadow has a review of an early draft of the pilot for 17th Precinct. Deadline reported earlier this week that its prospects for getting picked up to series aren't so good, while Grimm is looking stronger. We'll know for sure on May 16 (NBC upfronts) if not sooner.

Fairly Legal with Michael Trucco has been picked up for a second season. They start production this summer and the show will be back in the first quarter of 2012. Hopefully, the rest of the Caprica and BSG cast will get a chance to guest star.

Weekend wrap: cast updates, previews and the Kevin Murphy interview

A round of updates to end the week.

First off, The Caprica Times has a fantastic new interview with Kevin Murphy that covers tons of lingering questions about the show, about Murphy's work in the second half of the season, some of the challenges they faced in production, and the plan they had for Caprica season two.

In the interview, Murphy lays out the main storylines for most of the main characters and throws in a few interesting tidbits about the first season that I don't think we've heard yet on the podcasts or elsewhere (the last minute retcon of Teryl Rothery's character, for instance). The article is a must-read, check it out on The Caprica Times.

He also confirmed that John Pyper-Ferguson will show up on Hellcats this season. Magda Apanowicz will guest star in the next two episodes and Brian Markinson has pretty much taken over Aaron Douglas' role, so he might show up again next week, too. Previews of the next episode are embedded below.

Here is what the actors are up to this week:

Eric Stoltz will be back on TV this summer in an episode of Wilfred, a new FX sitcom with Elijah Wood that looks insane, according to a tweet from the show's casting director. No word yet on which episode, but the show premieres on June 23, so there's plenty of time for someone to squeal.

Magda Apanowicz is working on a new project. No info on what it is yet, but she tweeted this photo the other day:



The first preview of Los Americans, Esai Morales' new web series, has surfaced on Blip.tv. It includes some footage from the show and a brief interview with Esai. Los Americans premieres on May 26 on PIC.tv.



Gun Hill Road will get a screening at the Lincoln Center on May 5. Details on Facebook. And io9.com has a nice long article with some new info on 17th Precinct and Esai's character.

James Marsters will soon be recording another book in The Dresden Files series, Ghost Story.

Aleks Paunovic talked to Shogun Gamer about some of his recent projects; Mortal Kombat: Legacy, The Hostage, This Means War, In the Name of the King 2 and his 2009 film, Personal Effects. Here's a snippet or two:

Ian: You’ve done a lot of sci-fi, action and dramatic work so is there something that you haven’t done yet that you really want to jump in to or would like your career to be known for or do you want to continue doing more genre based work?
Aleks: I love the sci-fi community. The sci-fi community and the fans are nothing but amazingly generous so I have no problem staying on the sci-fi end of it. But there are some roles that I would really like to do, I would love to do a dirty and down cop show. That to me is a huge thing and just trying to figure stuff out and everything; I love that type of stuff and I would love to get more into that kind of stuff.

Ian: Somewhat of a riff on the last question but is there anyone in the industry that you would really like to collaborate with in the future?
Aleks: Clint Eastwood, hands down man. A friend of mine just finished working with him and he said it was nothing but great and that he’s an actor’s director and it was great. Something like that you know, you’ve seen this persons work be acclaimed all over the world and you’re stepping into those shoes and getting direction from Clint Eastwood would be awesome.

Ian: Besides Mortal Kombat, what upcoming projects do you have in the pipeline that you’re really excited about or you want people to check out?
Aleks: Tahmoh and I have a few more things that we’re working on feature wise to do because we’re going to keep on doing the executive producing end of it and trying to get our own projects out there. Mortal Kombat is coming out, this film I did called Charlie is coming out, and This Means War. I’m also trying to create my own stuff also. I love getting into the room and love working networks and studios but I also love the indie aspect of doing your own dream type thing.

Who are some artists, in your opinion, who never lost their cool?
I think The Onion is a good example of something that has kept being good, never lost its level of quality. Cormac McCarthy has had a really good run of writing great stuff. [Yasujirō] Ozu with his films, that was a long career that never got bad. Again, it just depends on the individual. I don't think there's a universal "sell by" date that applies to all artists.

In addition to releasing your book [Zombie Spaceship Wasteland] and touring, what other projects do you have in the works?
I've got a new album that I'll record next month so, I'm doing as many shows as I can leading up to that.
