Blood and Chrome to premiere in 2012, Eureka cancelled, and some general cast updates

A quick round of updates.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome won't premiere until 2012. It's not really news, but this is the first time it's coming from a network source, Syfy President Dave Howe.

THR: Publisher Bigpoint has over 2 million registered players for Battlestar Galactica Online even without the TV show airing. What are your thoughts about the opportunities the online gaming space opens up for Battlestar and other TV shows current or past?
Howe: I think when you have a property like Battlestar Galactica, it’s timeless. Yet it’s great to have a TV series on air simultaneously, but it’s not necessary. Battlestar is a franchise that’s existed since the ‘80s. We took a run at it. Universal Pictures I think has a big development and potentially another movie. It’s a known franchise that will always work if you are true to its spirit and you really find the right vehicle to create properties and games that can live in isolation. We had great success with the TV series. We’ve seen great success with the video game. We’re developing a potential pilot for another spin-off series, Blood and Chrome, which will launch next year. We have an amazing franchise that we want to continue to exploit irrespective of whether the TV series is on air.
THR: Does the success of the Battlestar game open up other opportunities for the Battlestar franchise?
Howe: Yes, it has. It really has. It confirms what we expected, that the franchise is bigger than a TV series that we happen to be running. I think it says to us that it’s an amazing property that we can continue to develop and grow. We can continue to figure out new ways to tell the story and to spin off the story. You can look forward to more Battlestar Galactica spin-offs in the future.

Elsewhere in Imagine Greater (because it's just too frakking unbelievable), only days after announcing that Eureka has been picked up for a short sixth season, Syfy has decided to cancel the show and not give it those six episodes after all. And they're announcing this before the final season has even begun to air. Deadline writes:

Not only is Eureka being canceled, Syfy has also reversed its decision on ordering a final six-episode season. I hear the change of heart was made high up based on financial reasons. Eureka, starring Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, has had OK ratings, with its current Season 4.5 premiering last month to 2 million total viewers, 893,000 of them in the adults 18-49 category. Created by Andrew Cosby and Jaime Paglia and produced by Universal Cable Prods, Eureka is now in production on its 13-episode Season 5 order. With filming coming to an end in only two weeks, I hear the producers are begging for a way to properly end the show.

Looks like all the promotion has definitely paid off, too. Gun Hill Road was the top grossing independent film this weekend. From IndieWIRE:

Two directorial debuts out of Sundance - Rashaad Ernesto Green’s “Gun Hill Road” and Evan Glodell’s “Bellflower” - led specialty box office debuts this weekend, each taking quite respectable numbers. According to estimates provided by Rentrak earlier today, “Road” - distributed by Motion Film Group - edged out “Bellflower,” taking in $37,800 from 3 screens (Angelika Film Center and AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan and the AMC Bay Plaza Cinemas in the Bronx) for a $12,600 per-theater-average. The film, which follows a man released from prison who comes home to find that his teenage son has come out as a transgender woman, played several sold out shows and the numbers bode well for the film as it expands beyond New York City.

Meanwhile, Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the box office number one overall.

Patton Oswalt has made a new 5-second film, The Final Battle.



Mortal Kombat: Legacy, with Ryan Robbins, Aleks Paunovic and Tahmoh Penikett, will be out on DVD and Blu-ray on November 8. Movieweb has the details and list of special features.
