Updates: 17th Precinct, The Killing, Riese, and other cast projects

Updates in random order:

IMDB has the first poster for Playback, Alessandra Torresani's new movie. No release date yet, but you can follow updates on that front on the film's official Facebook page.

Eric Stoltz is directing another episode of Glee.

Judas Kiss, with Richard Harmon and Genevieve Buechner, will be screened at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival on April 22.

Richard Harmon has been cast in Ansiedad (Anxiety), a new film with Eva Mendes that's shooting in Vancouver these days. More details about the film at ReviewonMovies.com.

Richard also attended the premiere of The Killing the other day. For photos (and general updates on his projects), visit RichardHarmonFan.com. And Cinemablend has a few new featurettes for The Killing, which premieres on Sunday, April 3, at 9 pm on AMC.

Riese is now available (or will be available on March 29) in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Japan, Latin America, Russia, Portugal and the Benelux countries. Details and links on the Riese blog.

Gun Hill Road with Esai Morales will be screened at the NYU Cantor Center on March 31. Esai attended the 25th Anniversary Genesis Awards last week. There is a photo from the event at Forbes.com and a short video interview right here:

Tricia Helfer was also at the event. MNN.com has a report, with a quick mention of 17th Precinct:

"The Humane Society does an incredible job of reminding people that we share the planet with other sentient beings that do not deserve the cruelty and horrific conditions that we put them in for our pleasure, profit and consumption," said Esai Morales, who follows what he calls a "flexatarian" diet "because I travel out of the country a lot and it's difficult to find healthy, organic food." He'll be seen next in the movie "Gun Hill Road," which won raves at the Sundance Film Festival, and shot a pilot for NBC called "17th Precinct," a police procedural with a mystical twist. Tricia Helfer co-stars as a necromancer. "I can touch dead people and understand what happened to them," she explained. Helfer, who eats fish but not meat or poultry and rescues and fosters animals at home, encourages others to do the same and never buy from puppy mills. "There are so many unwanted animals out there that need a home and love," she said.

No photos of Esai on the set yet, but new photos are coming in almost every day. There is a nice shot of the precinct building on Flickr, a few more photos with Jamie Bamber and James Callis at CaughtonSet.com, another batch with Kristin Kreuk, and Craig Anderl (assistant director) has posted a few BTS pics on Twitter, including the very first one of Eamonn Walker. (Side note: discover Lights Out if you haven't. Fantastic show. Tuesdays, 10 pm, FX.)

Season three of United States of Tara kicks off next Monday (March 28) at 10:30 pm. Showtime has released several interviews with the cast discussing their characters. Here is the one with Patton Oswalt:

Rise of the Apes with Leah Gibson is getting released on August 5, not around Thanksgiving, after all.

Score: A Hockey Musical with John Pyper-Ferguson will get a couple of screenings at the 2011 Philadelphia CineFest. The film has been out on DVD in Canada for a while now.

Ryan Robbins started filming the short film Pleased to Meet You the other day. There is a photo from the set on his Facebook page.

Mike Dopud is shooting another pilot, Echoes, with a few other people who worked on Stargate Universe. Red Eye Chicago has the details.

Torchwood: Miracle Day has a definite premiere date and a poster. The first episode will air on Friday, July 8 on Starz. More details and the press release at io9.com.

Great news today. Esai Morales is the first Caprica actor (and second Adama) to be cast in 17th Precinct. He'll be joining James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Jamie Bamber. Here is the report from Deadline:

Esai Morales has joined the cast of Ron Moore's NBC drama pilot 17th Precinct. Set in a city ruled by magic, it revolves around the workings of the 17th, headed by Detective Chief Inspector Wilder Blanks (Eamonn Walker). Morales, repped Innovative and Brillstein, will play his second in command, Lt. Liam Butterfield.

In other pilot news, Mike Dopud is filming the one for Exit Strategy (CIA action procedural for Fox, with Ethan Hawke, Megan Dodds and Tom Sizemore).

Final reminder: Paula Malcomson guest stars on Fringe tonight (9 pm, Fox). There are a couple of sneak peeks (without Paula) at Fox.com.

New interviews this week:

Bear McCreary talked to Film Music Magazine. Snippet:

I like to use every project I work on as a chance to be a better writer. I’m fortunate also in that the show justifies this. Most TV is about establishing a tone and not deviating from it. And there is a tone on all my series. There’s also a sense of exploration that I really enjoy. I try to work with orchestral sounds and solos that I haven’t worked with before, to expand my toolkit.

I think if you go back to Battlestar Galactica, which was my first professional gig, the use of orchestra was very minimal, very restrained and then when I got into Caprica and especially Human Target I was able to explore more. That has continued through The Cape -- every week I’m trying to find new sounds.

I take a moment to pull aside a player and say “show me your instrument, show me how it works.” Then I get to go home and write a new episode and hear them play again in a week. There’s no experience in an academic environment that’s like that, so it’s a unique opportunity to get better at composing.

Another one of his shows, The Walking Dead, is now out on DVD and Blu-ray.

James Marsters posted the first video Q&A on his official site the other day. He also posted a video invitation to The Bard's Birthday Bash, an event that will take place in South Orange, NJ, on April 30. JamesMarsters.eu has a snippet from a recent interview with the San Diego LGBT Weekly in which he mentions that he will be recording more Dresden Files books and that there might be a new TV show for him on the horizon.

Kacey Rohl talked to the Vancouver Sun, mostly about Red Riding Hood (out in theatres now). Snippet from the article:

Currently in the midst of auditions for pilot week — the cluster of seasonal calls for new TV shows — Rohl says she had no idea that landing a role in Red Riding Hood would be a big deal, but she's beginning to grasp the career shift.

"I think this has opened more doors for me than I imagined it would," she says. "Before this, the biggest (part I landed) was in an AMC series called The Killing (a new series starring Mireille Enos from Big Love)."

And there are two new interviews with Avan Jogia. In the first one (on YouTube), he talks about Victorious (his show on Nickelodeon). The second one is on Celebuzz and it's mostly about his Straight But Not Narrow campaign. Snippet:

How did you come up with the idea to start Straight But Not Narrow?

I kind of found the idea based on where I’m from and the kind of culture that we have in Vancouver. My mother is a hairdresser so I grew up in a lot of gay culture and I have friends who have gay parents and friends who have gay brothers and it didn’t make a lot of sense to me that there was a huge amount of [separation] between the lines.

I thought, I have some friends who work with charities so why not I start a charitable campaign? So, I came to my friends Andre Pochan and Heather Wilk [of Cause Creative Marketing] who work with a bunch of charities and I told them that I wanted to start this charity campaign and we started moving on from there.

And coming to a TV screen near you:

Time After Time, a TV film with Carmen Moore and Richard Harmon, premieres on Hallmark this Saturday at 9 pm.

And Paula Malcomson guest stars on Fringe this Friday. Here is the teaser:

Spoiler TV has a behind-the-scenes video from the new season of United States of Tara, with Patton Oswalt.

Avan Jogia has shot a brief anti-homophobia ad for the Straight But Not Narrow campaign, which he also launched. You can check out the clip at On Top Magazine.

Red Riding Hood, with Kacey Rohl and Michael Hogan, opens in theatres later this week. Collider has a bunch of clips from the movie. Spoiler TV has a nice still with Kacey Rohl and Amanda Seyfried.

Genevieve Buechner and Richard Harmon will both attend the first screening of Judas Kiss at the Phoenix Film Festival. More details at the Judas Kiss blog.

A.V. Club has the full teaser for Game of Thrones (Jane Espenson on the writing team).

The Walking Dead will return for a second season in October.

Riese: Kingdom Falling is finally available in Canada. Caprica and BSG actors include Ryan Robbins, Alessandro Juliani, Leah Gibson, Ben Cotton and Richard Harmon. You can watch the show at Spacecast.com and it's still up at Syfy, too.

This Needs to Stop blog has a new interview with Leah Gibson. Snippet below, follow the link for the rest.

TNTs: Was Doctor Manhattan’s blue “member” distracting in The Watchmen?

Leah: Incredibly. I had my hands up on guard between takes the entire time.

TNTs: What was the first celeb encounter you’ve had since being in the business that left you completely star struck?

Leah: Juliette Lewis. When I was at the Toronto Film Fest in the fall, I walked right into a personal photo shoot she was having. We locked eyes for a few moments and I could feel in my heart it was love at first sight. I’m sure she’s still thinking about me with just as much affection. Juliette I love you.

TNTs: Who would you love to work with in the future?

Leah: I am slightly obsessed with Meryl Streep. With Susan Sarandon. With Debra Messing. And Juliette, of course. -- Keep reading

You can also catch Leah in He Loves Me, a TV film that premieres tonight on Lifetime (9 pm ET). Jill Teed (Col. Patel) also appears in it. Daemon's TV has the promotional pics and teaser.

Spacecast has an interview with Ryan Robbins, mostly about Riese:

“It has elements of mystery and discovery. It’s a fairy tale for grown-ups. It’s an underdog story, it’s a story about trying to get somebody back to where they rightfully belong and it’s a journey and I really think that people respond to (that),” says Robbins.

Robbins plays Rand, the leader of the Resistance, who is trying to stop the hostile takeover of Eleysia and surrounding areas.

“It was ultimately a no-brainer that I wanted to do this project. The character really drew me in and what I had seen of the show, I’d never seen anything like it. I knew people who saw it would respond to it, I just didn’t realize how many people.”

The Daily Blam has the first pic of Ryan in Mortal Kombat. There are also a couple of clips with him and Chris Heyerdahl talking about Sanctuary at the Armageddon Expo at Multipleverses. And the first stills from the next new episode of the show, "Pax Romana," with Polly Walker returning, are at Spoiler TV.
